MInicamp jaipur :)

Now this was the biggest and one of its kind event organized by MCR, and obviously the expectations were quite high. And after the event concluded we know the bar has been raised.

The event kick started with the memento signing by all the attendees. With a single sign everybody engraved their love for Mozilla on a single chart paper. Now the challenge was to bring people from different colleges, regions on a common platform and for this idea given by Vineel worked like a charm. All we needed to do was to call random two people from group and ask them to meet as a long lost friend : simple and Effective. This helped us to create a friendly and open environment.

Then Vineel (Mozilla India Community Liaison ) briefed everyone about what is Mozilla and Mozilla Mission. Vineel also explained what exactly is Firefox OS and what are the future plans to compete in the market.
This time we(Osho, Trishul) kept our self confined to organizers roles and gave the session responsibilities to Adit, Tushar and Lavish. Very first time we tried concept of parallel sessions. We arranged two parallel sessions of webmaker tools (a bit for non-coders) and also App-dev(a bit for web-coders). To help the attendees to choose the right session as per their interest, we the session leads briefed a bit about their session before hand.

Now when the sessions started Lavish, Adit, Tushar completely rocked. As single soldier can not win the war alone. These fellows were well assisted by Chandan Baba, Anju Chandel, Gautam Sharma, Raj Rohit, Dipesh Monga, Talha Anwar. And as a team, we were able infuse the charm and able to deliver the knowledge.








And hats off to the attendees, we have organized a number of workshops in various parts of Rajasthan in span of an year, but I can proudly say we had the best set of attendees in this Minicamp, enthusiastic, quick-learner and most important willing to take an extra leap to cross the bar.


After these session, was the turn of Ice Breaker Session “Ali Baba 40 thieves” and this was the point where we came to know what our community exactly is. Every body busted the floor with awesome dance moves, Chandan Baba being the Best :P .

After that Raj Suthar explained various contribution verticals in which one can contribute to Mozilla. The idea was delivered that anyone can contribute to Mozilla by as simple as even Tweeting.
Trishul then explained a bit about mozilla code base, Bugzilla and a bit Geeky part.  We started each session with collecting ideas and pasting it over idea tanks.


The idea for this event was to keep hands-on approach for every thing and in complete event we stuck to this approach. Attendees made various makes live at the event, also we submitted a firefox app right in the event.

Now finished from the organizers side, we called up the attendees and one by one they spoke about what they felt about the event and what they were able to achieve.

Moving towards the conclusion the final part was a surprise PRIZES, we awarded prizes to the best performer from each event. And last but not the least a big thanks to some really creative people who engraved their creativity on charts and we were totally awe-struck.

JNU WebDay

This was a event hosted by one of our most enthusiastic  contributors Shahbaz Alam and was the first event hosted by him thus had a special value for each one of us.
Event was hosted at Saras parlor and had many contributors from Jaipur National University .

Event was initiated by none other than the host himself Mr.Shahbaz Alam who explained everyone about the What Mozilla is all about and requested everyone to introduce them self in few words along with the  description of the open-source idea in their vision.

I explained about what open source is and what mozilla is? and told us about the ways of contribution to mozilla.

A brief description of Webmaker was given and App-dev session started.

Participants were very much excited to learn about app development.

manifest files were given to students and hands on started.

 

Followed by a hands on session in which we created multiple webmaker makes and multiple application ideas were suggested by the fellow contributors and then came our first app for the day.  which was titled as Make me smile developed by hitesh 
    

Finally event summed up with the group picture.

At the end of session we had some awesome contributors who have the will and wisdom to carry ahead the spirit of the open-source .

Need a live DVD. Use the Ubuntu distro from ver 10.04 and above, Kali live, Debian Wheezy live, or any live debian-based distro. Use according to the architecture you installed, either 32bit or 64bit.

Then boot with it and once in the system, open up a terminal and do this:

1.# fdisk -l (search for the partition where you installed kali: /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, etc)
2.# mount /dev/sda1 /mnt (Mount the kali partition)
3.# mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev (You will need to mount the /dev directory into mnt)
4.# chroot /mnt (change the root to the mounted partition to be able to run the command from the mounted partition)
5.# grub-install --recheck /dev/sda (install grub in the HDD sda, not sda1, sda2, etc.., just sda.

Now, please issue these 2 commands, if they fail, do not worry, you will have to do it after reboot.. This will make win7 show up in the grub menu.
# os-prober (looks for partitions in the HDD and register them in the os-prober file.
# update-grub (Takes some templates, including the os-prober file and writes them in the menu)

That is all, once done, reboot..You should see the grub menu. If you do not see the win7 in the menu, don't worry, just enter kali, open up a terminal and run the 2 commands I posted above:
#os-prober (looks for partitions in the HDD and register them in the os-prober file.
#update-grub (Takes some templates, including the os-prober file and writes them in the menu)

Reboot again, you should see the kali and win7 in the menu.

Mozilla User Research Program - Community Dinner

During the User research program held at Jaipur the volunteers stayed for two days due the schedule mismatches i got the chance to meet the MUR Team at the community dinner eve and had a great time with them and it was one of the most memorable moments . The Community Dinner was held at the Forresta kitchen Restaurant  was one the most memorable  dinner i have ever had. All the community members were present and joined by all the User Research team members and we enjoyed a lot with great food. At my table i was joined by Peiying Mo, Elizabeth Hunt and Adit Bharadwaj. We had the ordered traditional Rajasthani food, with Some spicy dish( which by the way had after chilly effect), some mixed Veg dish at hands and the specially  'Lassi' which gave a sweet ending. At the dinner we had some awesome talks about the growing of the open source world and  also discussed the working atmosphere at the home office in California . And at the end "The Paan" which gave a twisted ending to the dinner for everyone over there. it was awesome, some of the pictures of the community dinner below:

Falling short of words to explain how we (Trishul n Me) felt standing on the other side of table addressing 40 students, where we used to sit and learn. Feeling nervous-cum-excited we commenced the workshop with a formal introduction (with our official juniors :) ).





Then followed the App-Dev session – the attendees were simply surprised by the ease of app building with Firefox. HTML, CSS and JS were very familiar names, technologies which they already excelled and with a drop of manifest.webapp (added by Me) they were already transformed from web developer to an app developer and this overjoyed them.


Trishul then explained them the awesome HTML5 and CSS3 elements like, various input types, CSS3 transitions, CSS3 transforms, also briefed them about in-browser databases. I must say the crowd we got was too enthusiastic and readily adapting the technology. The firebug tool just thrilled them and enhanced their strength.

Now after an hour of session now the time was for hands-on-Firefox. Now this was the time for us to get bowled over. Each and every one created a web-app on the idea provided (which was finally converted to a Firefox app) and earned the SWAGS from Mozilla.

Finally I explained them various support verticals in which they can contribute to Mozilla, like AoA, SuMo, Bugzilla etc. Hoping to see new contributors for Mozilla :) .
Just to add-in, we also introduced Cordova and explained them that how can they port their webapps to app for android, firefox, Windows, etc. The idea of white labeling (code once, replicate to many) just mesmerized them.
 Ready FOr a some rocking apps from Rajasthan University ...  :P

MozExplore At Arya College Kukas

After covering school, now its time to spread “Mozilla” word in “Arya College of Engineering & I.T.”, this time again Mozilla Community Rajasthan organize another workshop on mozilla in ACEIT. Over 300+ students participated in workshop. Speakers of this workshop were:

• Osho Parth
• Varun Kaushik
• Lavish Aggarwal

Workshop was started sharp at 10:00AM, all speakers were welcomed and workshop was initiated by Mr. Osho Parth. He told student about Open Source, FOSS, how they can get code of any open source softwares and can work on it, he also told them how mozilla is part of open source and what students can do for mozilla.

Next session was taken by Mr. Lavish Aggarwal (Me), introducing mozilla, its mission and other products of mozilla which were new to students as they were only aware about Firefox Browser continuing with this they were also told them about Open Web and philosophies of Open Web.

Putting the next step forward, next session was taken up by Mr. Varun Kaushik. He told students about SUMO covering AOA, ln10, QA, Support Forums and writing an article. Students were keen to know about such convenient way of contributions.

Keeping the continuity of workshop, me and Osho introduced students about one of the sexiest tool of mozilla i.e; Mozilla Webmaker. Students were amazed by seeing online editing of websites using X-Ray Goggle, live rendering of html pages using thimble and video mixing tool i.e; Popcorn.

Next session was taken by Mr. Osho, in which he introduced students about Firefox OS,  its different layers and why it is useful and many advantages of OS.

Students were eager to see this new OS in there hands ASAP :)

Here comes the time to develop apps for Firefox OS, In this session I told students about how to develop app in simple 4 steps that were:

• Install Simulator
• Create a Launching Page
• Create manifest.webapp file
• Execute it on simulator

Students were amazed to see that how easy it is to build app in Firefox OS by simple HTML5.

Bringing the workshop to the end an interesting session about cracking was taken by Mr. Osho, where he told students about system hacking, grub hacking and many more cool stuffs.
SWAGS were also distributed to all interactive participants.

 MozMaker @ Mandawa

 This time Mozilla Community Rajasthan got the opportunity to spread the word of Mozilla in the Rural areas of Mandawa ,Jhunjhunu . A place where there is not much information sources available to know the updates about the current trends in IT. This was an adorable effort of Ethics Institute and Technobyte Computers to bring the knowledge of open source at the door steps of Madawa students. 

 

The Workshop at Techno Byte Jhunjunu was a great Success as it was First of its kind at that place. There was Multiple Session in the workshop covering topics like:

• Open Source Introduction
• Mozilla Products
• WebMaker Tools
• Firefox OS Architecture
• Firefox OS App Dev.

Workshop was started by a introductry lecture on opensource by the Center Manager of Ethics and the Center Manager of Technobyte Jhunjhunu. which included the basics of open Source.He also announced for free courses in the all the centers of technobyte and ethics for the five most interactive students during the workshop.

 

Then the next session was on Open Source Movement and the role of Mozilla community in it.  About the various products of Mozilla community including (Firefox , ThunderBird ,Persona and Bugzilla etc). They were also informed about the various ways of contributing to the Mozilla movement .

 The session was of introduction to the webmaker tools. During this session the students were acknowledged about the various tools (like Thimble, X-ray Goggles and persona ). 

Then the students were also informed about the Operating system introduced by Mozilla. The architecture of Firefox OS was also explained along with a app development session for the Firefox OS. Students were amazed to know that the They could develop apps with just the knowledge of HTML,CSS and JavaScript..

 During the next session the students were informed about the Firefox Students Ambassadors program. TechnoMoz club was inaugurated and around 50 new FSA's were recruited and were acknowledged about the role and responsibilities of FSA. Most of them are SuMo contributors and others are App Developers. Expecting at least 5 apps in near future from the App Developers.

 At the end of the workshop the students were awarded with scholarships as promised by the organizers . The remarkable success of the workshop could be easily seen in the form of the joy and happiness on the faces of the attendees.
